I always wondered - when an Alien fed - if the two mouths fought to see who got the food. Two mouths, two throats, right? But I'm sure the tongue just acts as a weapon more than a feeding utensil and that the outer mouth's throat contains the esophagus.

Spot on. That'e exactly how it has been stated from many resources. It's just an extension for tearing, ripping and maiming the victims, a deadly weapon, one that had me gripped when i first witnessed it years ago when viewing Ridley Scotts Alien.

the alien inner mouth is used primarily for attacks, once it cracks into tissue/materials the second jaw slhut and is used to tear a fatal wound into it's prey, sometimes rendering them helpless, other times, killing them dead.
