^There's an old short story (or an excerpt from one, I'm not sure) I found in an American literature book a few years ago that actually depicts a face of a guy that looks remarkably like that guy (was a painting and not a photograph).
The story was old as gramps' hamburger ass, so, though I don't have the picture or any idea what the hell the story was called, I've always believed that that's where the troll originated.
