CALABRESE, PVT. (Eddie Yansick) One of the military complement of the USM AURIGA. It was he who shot RIPLEY in the head with a SHOCKRIFLE to stop her strangling DR WREN.

CALL, ANNALEE (Winona Ryder) Emotional but strong, CALL was an AUTON, or SECOND GEN; an advanced type of ANDROID. She escaped the purge, and found herself intrigued and moved by the work of MORSE and other banned histories. She made it a sort of quest to do everything she could to protect humans from the ALIEN, even though she herself never questioned why she was so eager to protect those who would so easily destroy her.

When she got wind of the fact that RIPLEY was being cloned for the QUEEN inside her on a starship called the AURIGA, she joined the band of mercenaries that were transporting stolen CRYOTUBEs to the ship for use as hosts. She kept the fact that she was an ANDROID a secret as long as possible. When the BETTY docked with the AURIGA, CALL made sure everyone else was busy, then headed for RIPLEY’s cage, hoping to find the QUEEN still gestating inside her. On the contrary, she found the QUEEN gone and RIPLEY still very much alive. CALL challenged her to help her kill all the ALIENs and save mankind, and then couldn’t understand why RIPLEY wasn’t havin of it. She was shortly thereafter captured by WREN, who accused her of terrorism. She tried to get ELGYN to believe her about the ALIENs, comparing it to the LACERTA WORM PLAGUE, but he was more worried about being double-crossed by the AURIGA soldiers. Whilst they were killing off all but WREN and DISTEPHANO, the ALIENs took the chance to escape.

As the BETTY crew, minus VRIESS headed back to the ship, an ALIEN trapped and killed ELGYN. RIPLEY then turned up and killed the ALIEN. Ever-caring, CALL tried to comfort HILLARD, but found that none of the BETTY crew trusted her after discovering her a spy. CALL tried to dissuade CHRISTIE from allowing RIPLEY to escape with them, convinced that her ALIEN DNA would make her turn against them, but even he wasn’t listening to her. It was only VRIESS, the only she cared about the most, that still liked and trusted her.

As they headed back to the BETTY, she tried desperately to regain the trust and friendship of the rest of the crew, but found herself more intrigued by RIPLEY. She saw the true, caring side of RIPLEY when they happened upon the previous seven failed attempts at cloning her. Climbing up the elevator shaft from the flooded kitchen, she was shot in the chest by WREN, but managed to save herself and free the rest of the crew from the shaft. But her secret was out; RIPLEY discovered her to be an ANDROID. All the trust and respect she had attempted to get back from her crewmates was now gone. Even VRIESS was shocked. But this incident formed a special bond between her and RIPLEY: they were both inhuman creatures striving for some sort of humanity.

When the BETTY crew discovered she was an ANDROID, and could get interface with FATHER to their advantage, they began treating CALL like just an application. She became disgusted with herself, and couldn’t understand how RIPLEY could live knowing she wasn’t human. RIPLEY managed to convince her that just because she was artificial didn’t mean she wasn’t a person. CALL accelerated the AURIGA and set it to crash, then headed for the BETTY. CALL discovered how much she now cared for RIPLEY when the clone was captured by ALIENs. She couldn’t accept that she was gone, but PURVIS managed to convince her to carry on.

Back on the BETTY, CALL prepped the ship for departure. She was suddenly taken hostage by WREN, but rescued by PURVIS, who then used the CHESTBURSTER inside him to kill both himself and WREN. As they were about to leave, RIPLEY reappeared and hurried off to help fly the BETTY. CALL remained behind to help close the airlock. It was then that the NEWBORN attacked her. When DISTEPHANO came to her aid, the NEWBORN attacked and killed him, giving CALL the chance to hide. RIPLEY felt the NEWBORN’s presence and came to help, killing it and saving CALL. As JOHNER and VRIESS flew the vessel down into the atmosphere of EARTH, RIPLEY and CALL looked through a window at the planet, overawed at its beauty. CALL’s nightmare was over, and it had helped her discover herself

CASEY NEWT’s doll. By the time RIPLEY found NEWT, all that was left of CASEY was her head. NEWT lost this when she was abducted by an ALIEN in the sub-basement reservoir.

CATERPILLAR Usually going under the name 'CAT', it was a heavy machinery company founded in 1925. They were supplying POWERLOADERS to commercial and military clients in 2179.

CETTI EPSILON NC-104 Site of a rather nasty incident involving the COLONIAL MARINEs or the prison where DRAKE was once incarcerated. It isn’t known exactly what happened here. In James Cameron’s original script for ALIENS, DRAKE had some graffiti about the planet on his vest.

CHAPMAN, XANDER CHAPMAN was Director of Astro-Cartography at RIDTON CORP in London, where he met LAMBERT. The two started a relationship and were married four months later. However the marriage did not last and they were divorced after just 18 months. CHAPMAN was no longer with RIDTON at this point and LAMBERT took up a position with RED STAR LINE.


CHESTBURSTER When the embryonic ALIEN is large enough to be able to survive without a host, and is ready to develop into an adult ALIEN, it bursts through the chest cavity and leaves the host dead. It remains in this form for a short period as it grows more rapidly outside of the host’s body. Name from the script only, to make it easier to distinguish between the ALIEN’s different forms.

CHRISTIE (Gary Dourdan) Tough, cool and efficient, CHRISTIE was probably the most trusted and likeable member of the BETTY crew when it docked with the AURIGA to deliver the CRYOTUBEs of new hosts that they had stolen from a hijacked ship. Though there was a bond between him and both ELGYN and JOHNER, it was VRIESS who got on best with him. This could have been the result of the incident on KAWLANG, which led to the creation of the KAWLANG MANEUVER. CHRISTIE was by far the best shot of the BETTY crew, as he proved on several occasions aboard the AURIGA, most notably when WREN accused them of terrorism. He had two pistols mounted on pulleys hidden up his sleeves that slid out from concealment very easily. When ELGYN died, and the rest of the crew appeared to be falling apart, it was CHRISTIE who rallied everyone together, and, proving his caring side, allowed RIPLEY, WREN and DISTEPHANO safe passage off the doomed ship, dismissing his latter claims of not trustinbody. When they were forced to climb down a shaft to safety, CHRISTIE readily carried VRIESS on his back, as he does as they swam through the flooded kitchen and up the elevator shaft. It was whilst climbing up the elevator shaft that an ALIEN spat acid onto his face. His burns were deep and horrific and he knew he wouldn’t live. To save VRIESS, he used a sharp knife to cut through the bonds holding them and dropped down into the water below. In the original script, CHRISTIE died before he could cut the bonds. When VRIESS reached the top of the shaft, HILLARD (who was still alive at this point) cut them instead.

CHRISTOPHER One of the prisoners on FIORINA when RIPLEY crash landed there in an EEV in the 22nd century. He was killed in the QUINITRICETYLINE explosion. Name from script.

CLAUSS, DOCTOR BRIAN One of the scientists under WREN working on board the AURIGA to clone RIPLEY and thus clone a QUEEN. It is likely that CLAUSS was killed on the AURIGA. Name from novelisation.


CLEMENS, DOCTOR JOHNATHAN (Charles Dance) Medical officer with a 3C rating based on FIORINA when RIPLEY crash landed there in an EEV in the late 22nd century. After sharing a brief romantic encounter with RIPLEY, he was killed by the ALIEN right in front of her. A former morphine addict, CLEMENS served a seven year prison sentence on FIORINA for negligent manslaughter. He did a 36 hour shift on an ER, and got drunk. A boiler blew at a fuel plant and he was called back to deal with the 30 casualties. 11 of them died because he prescribed the wrong dosage of painkiller. Though ashamed of his past, he believed good came from it: he got off the morphine

CLONING The scientific process by which cells from the parent organism can be taken and used to fertilise the egg of the second organism. The result is a perfect copy of the parent organism. This technique was perfected in 1997 by Doctor Ian Wilmut of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute with a cloned sheep called Dolly. In the 24th century, WREN attempted to clone RIPLEY from a blood sample taken on FIORINA, but didn’t have as much success: all eight clones were imperfect. These imperfections ranged from gross physiological deformities to genetic crossing with the ALIEN

COLONIAL MARINE Member of the UNITED STATES COLONIAL MARINE CORP. More well-known as a GRUNT.

COMPANY, THE Popular name among it’s employees for the WEYLAND YUTANI corporation.

COMPANY REVIEW BOARD A board of representatives brought together to deal with matters that regard them all. Members mainly came from the INTERSTELLAR COMMERCE COMMISSION, the EXTRASOLAR COLONISATION ADMINISTRATION, WEYLAND YUTANI’s insurance company and a Federal investigation department. Such a COMPANY REVIEW BOARD was brought to GATEWAY STATION to investigate RIPLEY’s claims and the destruction of the NOSTROMO, despite it having occurred 57 years previously. Headed by VAN LEUWEN, they found RIPLEY to have acted with questionable judgement, and suspended her ICC licence indefinitely, forcing her to visit a psychiatric technician for treatment.

CORE SYSTEMS The region of space that includes SOL and the surrounding systems such as Tau Ceti, Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani, and Arcturus. The NARCISSUS drifted through the CORE SYSTEMS for 57 years before being picked up by a deep space salvage team. ACHERON was beyond the boundary of the CORE SYSTEMS

CONESTOGA Class of starship of which the SULACO and PATNA are both types.

CROWE, T. (Tip Tipping) Private in the UNITED STATES COLONIAL MARINE CORP. A private, quiet man who was most out of place in the COLONIAL MARINEs, he was stationed on board the SULACO for the mission to ACHERON. Always keeping himself to himself and a distance from everyone else, CROWE was killed in the ALIEN HIVE, when a bag carrying ammunition was set on fire and exploded.

CORAZON OSCURO, USCSS WEYLAND-YUTANI waste disposal vessel. BRETT served as tant engineer on the CORAZON OSCURO around 2108.

CRYOCHAMBER The capsules used by starship crews on journeys that last over seven days. Inside one, the person (or animal) is put in stasis, or CRYOSLEEP. More popularly known as a CRYOTUBE.

CRYOCOOL The chemical used in CRYOTUBEs to induce CRYOSLEEP. It inhibits normal bodily functions, thus allowing someone to remain unconscious for extended periods of time without physical ageing.

CRYOSLEEP The name for the process by which members of a starship crew are put into stasis via CRYOTUBES for journeys lasting in excess of seven days. During CRYOSLEEP, the body doesn’t age, which explains why RIPLEY didn’t age in the 57 years between the destruction of the NOSTROMO and the discovery of the NARCISSUS. The chemical CRYOCOOL is responsible for this. In CRYOSLEEP, mental functions are slowed down, but dreaming still occurs. Primarily, CRYOSLEEP, also known as HYPERSLEEP was used to cut the costs created by keeping a crew alive on long space journeys.


CRYOTUBE Also known as a CRYOCHAMBER, these were the capsules used by starship crews on journeys lasting in excess of seven days. Inside one, the person (or animal) is put into stasis, or CRYOSLEEP using the chemical, CRYOCOOL. CRYOTUBEs were often cylinders, with a clear lids, though later variants on the theme were more like giant technological coffins with a small glass plate over the occupant's face. DAIHOTAI Japanese company that manufactures all terrain vehicles such as the one used by the JORDEN family on ACHERON.

DALLAS, A.J.(Tom Skerritt) Captain of the NOSTROMO. A quiet, private and relaxed man, he didn’t allow himself to get worked up about anything. He took everything in his stride, hiding his true feelings and emotions from the rest of the crew. Their petty bickering annoyed him even more than it annoyed RIPLEY. When the NOSTROMO responded to a distress beacon and landed on ACHERON, DALLAS went out with KANE and LAMBERT to discover the source, but happened upon the DERELICT. On returning to the ship, DALLAS was at first concerned about the FACEHUGGER that had attached itself to KANE’s face, but after ASH assured him it was doing much harm, he gave all authority on the matter to him, much to RIPLEY’s chagrin.

He was as shocked as the rest of them when the CHESTBURSTER emerged from KANE, but set about organising the crew’s next actions straight away. He got ASH to construct a tracking device, and BRETT some cattle prods, then set out in teams to hunt the newborn ALIEN. Following BRETT’s death, and PARKER’s description of an ALIEN bigger than a man, DALLAS got PARKER to rig up several INCINERATOR units. DALLAS then took one of the INCINERATORs and entered the air duct the ALIEN was using to travel through the ship, with the aim of flushing it out into the airlock and then killing it. The ALIEN managed to trick him and lie in wait for him. As LAMBERT panicked, DALLAS finally felt the stress getting to him, and revealed to RIPLEY how he had to get out of the duct. Soon after, the ALIEN revealed itself and took him away to his death. All that PARKER found left was the INCINERATOR. In the original version of the film, DALLAS wasn’t killed in the duct, but was cocooned by the ALIEN. Later, after PARKER and LAMBERT had been killed, RIPLEY was on her way to turning the cooling units off when she heard groans. Investigating, she discovered DALLAS, and tried to free him. But he asked her to kill him, revealing to her how the ALIEN bred, by turning the victims into new eggs. BRETT was at an advanced stage of this metamorphosis. RIPLEY then incinerated him. Another scene not even filmed would have shown DALLAS and RIPLEY to have been lovers. They would have been interrupted by KANE’s body floating past the window.

DAVID (Pete Postlethwaite) One of the prisoners on FIORINA when RIPLEY crash landed there in an EEV in the late 22nd century. When RIPLEY suggested driving the ALIEN into the piston chamber and drowning it in molten lead, DAVID didn’t pretend he was keen on the idea. He even forgot what his part in the plan was. JUDE explained that he was to lead the ALIEN down channel B to the piston chamber, and he would close the door after him. Of course, something went wrong, the prisoners got lost and whilst DAVID was waiting, hiding behind his door, the ALIEN dropped down behind him and killed him

DERELICT Dubbed name for the alien spacecraft found on ACHERON. It was the distress beacon from the DERELICT that MOTHER intercepted. Located beyond the ILIUM RANGE of mountains, DALLAS, KANE and LAMBERT were the first to enter it, finding the SPACE JOCKEY and the chamber of EGGs. It was the FACEHUGGER from one of these EGGs that impregnated KANE. 57 years later, following RIPLEY’s return to EARTH, she gave co-ordinates for the DERELICT to BURKE, who got the JORDEN family to investigate. Russ JORDEN was convinced that the DERELICT would make them rich, but he, too, was overly curious, and was caught by a FACEHUGGER. According to historical records reviewed by DR GEDIMAN the DERELICT was destroyed in the ATMOSPHERE PROCESSOR explosion.

DIETRICH, C. (Cynthia Scott) Corporal in the UNITED STATES COLONIAL MARINE CORP. A serious, but fun-loving woman who was liked by those around her, she was stationed on board the SULACO for the mission to ACHERON. A qualified medtech, DIETRICH examined NEWT before descending into the HIVE with the other COLONIAL MARINEs. Always inquisitive, DIETRICH witnessed the death of a colonist and examined the substance the HIVE was made of before being grabbed by an ALIEN. Reflexively she fired her INCINERATOR. The blast caught FROST and led to the explosion. DIETRICH was believed killed in the HIVE, but later back on the APC, the MTOB displays reported differently. VASQUEZ wanted to return to save her and APONE, but RIPLEY and HUDSON didn’t share her sentiments. DIETRICH was killed on ACHERON, probably in the ATMOSPHERE PROCESSOR explosion

DILLON, LEONARD (Charles S. Dutton) Religious leader of the prisoners on FIORINA when RIPLEY crash landed there in the late 22nd century. As he explained to her, he was a murderer and rapist of women, of which 2 counts got him a life sentence. Slightly intimidated by the presence of a woman among all the men, he still gave a touching speech at the funeral of NEWT and HICKS, and later stopped GILLAS and a group of prisoners from raping RIPLEY. It was he that RIPLEY turned to for help, first to catch the ALIEN, and later to kill her, thus killing the QUEEN inside her. More intelligent than the average prisoner, he realised that the fact that the ALIEN wouldn’t kill RIPLEY gave them the advantage. Distinguishable by the small scar on his left cheek, DILLON organised all the prisoners in an attempt to drive the ALIEN into the piston chamber. When the ALIEN was trapped, he sacrificed himself in an attempt to hold it there as MORSE drowned them both in the molten lead. In the original script for ALIEN 3, DILLON escaped the molten lead, but was pulled back in by the drowning ALIEN

DISTEPHANO, VINCENT (Raymond Cruz) A soldier in the UNITED SYSTEMS MILITARY stationed on board the AURIGA when the BETTY docked with it to deliver stolen CRYOTUBEs containing new hosts for the QUEEN. As with most of the soldiers on board, DISTEPHANO was ignorant of what was really going on there. He was part of WREN’s team that rounded up the crew of the BETTY when CALL was accused of terrorism, having just tried to kill RIPLEY. The BETTY crew were better fighters and managed to kill all but WREN and DISTEPHANO. When the ALIENs escaped, ELGYN planned to use WREN as bargaining material: they escape and he lived, basically. DISTEPHANO tried to argue, but the mercenaries scared him. Following ELGYN’s death, CHRISTIE allowed both of them safe passage off the ship, if WREN would help. DISTEPHANO proved himselood shot, and was confident that he’d survive. He got excited on discovering that CALL was an AUTON, but still accepted her as a person. He managed to escape to the BETTY with CALL, JOHNER, VRIESS and later RIPLEY, but was subsequently killed by the NEWBORN, on discovering it in the cargo hold. He gave CALL time to escape it, though. First name from novelisation.

DNA Acronym for deoxyribonucleic acid. The substance in the chromosomes of higher organisms which stores genetic information. DNA can be obtained from anything that was a living part of the organism. RIPLEY was cloned on the AURIGA by DNA obtained from a blood sample taken on FIORINA. ALIENs are belived to be able to access a hosts DNA in order to take on traits of said host.

DOCKS The DOCKS on the AURIGA are located midships are are used for docking of smaller ships such as the freighter BETTY. The LIFEBOAT launch bays are located nearby the DOCKS.

DRAKE, M. (Mark Rolston) Private in the UNITED STATES COLONIAL MARINE CORP. Forming a double-act with VASQUEZ, he was stationed on board the SULACO for the mission to ACHERON. DRAKE met and bonded with VASQUEZ in juvenile prison. Both of them were conscripted into the COLONIAL MARINEs, reluctant at first, but then finding they liked it. Both DRAKE and VASQUEZ were overly-confident in their SMART GUNs, and even when GORMAN ordered them not to fire in the HIVE, they were probably responsible for saving the other COLONIAL MARINEs from the ALIENs. DRAKE provided the cover for the others to escape into the APC. He continued firing until the SMART GUN ran out of ammunition, at which point he began firing with his INCINERATOR. He didn’t see the ALIEN loom up behind him, but VASQUEZ did. She blew it away, covering DRAKE with the ALIEN acid, which killed him. VASQUEZ was devastated. Details of DRAKE and VASQUEZ’s past featured in James Cameron’s original script for ALIENS.

DROID Abbreviation of ANDROID. A robot that resembles a human.


DROPSHIP Versatile orbit-to-surface tactical and personnel carrier used by the UNITED STATES COLONIAL MARINE CORP in the mid-late 22nd century. With the ability to take-off vertically and act as a gun-ship to back-up land-based units, it was a standard piece of equipment on most USCM missions. Each DROPSHIP had a forward-mounted Gatling gun as well as a complete armament of missiles, which were housed in fold-out weapons pods. Other weapons could be stowed inside the DROPSHIP. The DROPSHIP was capable of withstanding direct weapons-fire and even a nuclear blast from a distance.

Entrance to the DROPSHIP was via a ramp, onto which an ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIER could easily drive, or via steps just aft of the ramp. Each DROPSHIP could hold one APC, so the amount of DROPSHIPs required for a mission was calculated by how many APCs there were, which was in turn calculated by how many COLONIAL MARINEs were assigned to the mission. Large troop carriers such as the SULACO had bpecifically designed for DROPSHIP launch and maintenance.

DROPSHIPs were usually controlled by two officers, the pilot (such as FERRO) and the weapon’s officer (such as SPUNKMEYER) – however they can be flown by just one crew member. Though trained COLONIAL MARINEs, they were rarely used as troops, usually remaining with the DROPSHIP.

DRYDOCK When a starship suffers significant damage requiring extensive repairs, it is impractical and dangerous to carry out these repairs in a space, so the ship enters an atmosphere and docks. DAVID commented to RIPLEY that he saw a drum of QUINITRICETYLINE explode and the damage put a tug in DRYDOCK for seventeen weeks.
