I've noticed that. Maybe it was originaly planned, or that they just wanted a new design.

try looking at the head. It looks different to me compared to a queen. It looks like it has more deatail on her crown.

Hmm... My sister calls it an Empress. It DOES look slightly different, though.

Also, I thought that it was an empress because it was huge. From Aliens, the queen was as big as the exosuit that Ripley was in.

I just think the the makers of the movie wanted to have the queen burst out of somewhere when they thought it was dead to add more action and stuff to it, not even thinking about the logical side of it.

I agree with Nightblade, they probably wanted to make the movie more exciting without even thinking that it would be just about impossible for the queen to survive.

Yes, continuity error, or possibly that what Lex suspected was, like Stalker said, the Queen finding her way up.
But I don't see how that was possible, when:
a - She popped up somewhere else
b - The Queen was nowhere to be seen when they were going up the tunnel
c - Even if she WAS in that tunnel, she popped up AFTER they got up
Unless... Well, unless she started digging out somewhere else in the tunnel, but that's pulling at straws there.

I don't see how she would've found a "weak wall" cutm3up, when she was 2000 ft underground. That part of the movie honestly made no sense to me. Even if it was the queen who lex saw climbing up the tunnel, to be in her position she must've climed to the top, ran far away from the tunnel, dug a hole, & buried herself in it. None of it honestly made any sense (thank you anderson, pfft).

It may have been the queen that lex saw crawling up the tunnel just before the alien jumped on Scar. Although how she just popped up out of the snow like that is beyond me, lol
